Pixel Art Creator

Draw, color and export pixel art directly in your browser — no software needed.

What is it?

The Pixel Art Creator is a free, browser-based drawing tool that lets you create classic pixel art on a square grid. Whether you are designing a game sprite, making a retro-style avatar, or just enjoying a relaxing creative session, you get a full set of drawing tools: pencil, eraser, paint bucket fill, and eyedropper color picker. Choose from grid sizes of 8×8, 16×16, 32×32, or 48×48, pick colors from the built-in palette or enter a custom hex code, and undo any mistake with a generous undo history. When your artwork is finished, export it as a high-resolution PNG scaled up to look crisp and clean — no blurry exports.

How to use it

  1. Select your canvas size from the grid options (8×8 for icons, 16×16 for sprites, 32×32 or 48×48 for detailed artwork). You can change size at any time — existing art will be cleared.
  2. Click or tap a color in the palette to select it, or click the custom color swatch to enter any hex code.
  3. Choose your tool: Pencil to draw pixel by pixel, Eraser to remove pixels, Fill to flood-fill a connected area with the current color, or Eyedropper to pick a color from the canvas.
  4. Click and drag across the grid to paint quickly. Use Undo (Ctrl+Z or the Undo button) to step back through your changes.
  5. Toggle the grid overlay on or off for a cleaner view. When done, click "Export PNG" to download your pixel art upscaled to a crisp, print-ready image.

Why use this tool

Most pixel art software requires a download and a learning curve. This tool launches instantly in any browser with zero setup. It is perfect for game developers who need quick sprites, designers who want to prototype icons, or anyone who finds pixel art meditative and fun. The upscaled PNG export means your artwork looks sharp at any size, whether you use it as a game asset, a profile picture, or print it out.

Frequently asked questions

What grid sizes are available?

You can choose from 8×8 (great for simple icons), 16×16 (classic game sprites), 32×32 (detailed characters), and 48×48 (complex artwork with fine detail). The canvas is always square.

How does the fill tool work?

The fill (paint bucket) tool flood-fills all connected pixels of the same color with your selected color. It works like the bucket fill in MS Paint — click on any area and it spreads to fill the entire matching color region.

How many undo steps are available?

The undo history stores up to 30 states. Click the Undo button or press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) to step backwards through your drawing history.

What resolution is the exported PNG?

The PNG is exported at 16× the grid size — so a 16×16 canvas becomes a 256×256 PNG, and a 32×32 canvas becomes 512×512. This ensures your pixel art looks crisp and sharp rather than tiny and blurry.

Can I import an existing image to edit?

Currently the tool supports drawing from scratch. Image import (which would convert a photo to pixel art) is a feature we plan to add. In the meantime, you can use our Image to ASCII tool for a similar conversion effect.
