Pet Age Calculator
How old is your pet in human years? Find out in seconds.
What is it?
The Pet Age Calculator is a free, easy-to-use tool that converts your pet's chronological age into its human-equivalent age. Unlike the outdated "multiply by 7" myth, modern veterinary science shows that dogs, cats, and other small animals age at very different rates depending on their species, size, and life stage. A small dog reaches adulthood far faster than a giant breed, and a cat's first year is equivalent to roughly 15 human years. Our calculator uses up-to-date conversion charts based on widely cited veterinary research to give you an accurate, meaningful number. Simply select your pet's species — Dog, Cat, Rabbit, Hamster, or Guinea Pig — enter their age in years and months, and (for dogs) choose their size category: Small, Medium, Large, or Giant. You'll instantly see their human-equivalent age and their current life stage — whether that's Kitten, Junior, Adult, Mature, Senior, or Geriatric. You can also download a personalised Pet Age Certificate as a PNG to share with friends and family.
How to use it
- Select your pet's species from the dropdown: Dog, Cat, Rabbit, Hamster, or Guinea Pig.
- If you selected Dog, choose your dog's size category: Small (under 10 kg), Medium (10–25 kg), Large (25–45 kg), or Giant (over 45 kg).
- Enter your pet's age in years using the number input field.
- Optionally, enter additional months for a more precise calculation.
- Click the "Calculate" button (or let the result update automatically).

- Click "Download Pet Age Certificate" to save a shareable PNG certificate showing your pet's human age.
Why use this tool
Understanding your pet's age in human terms is more than a fun fact — it has real practical value for every pet owner. Knowing your dog or cat's life stage helps you make better decisions about nutrition, exercise, veterinary check-up frequency, and preventive care. Senior pets, for example, benefit from more frequent vet visits, joint-supportive diets, and gentler exercise routines. Puppies and kittens have very different dietary and socialisation needs compared to adult animals. By translating your pet's age into a human framework, you can intuitively grasp where they are in their life journey and respond accordingly. Our dog age calculator accounts for size because larger breeds genuinely age faster than smaller ones — a 7-year-old Great Dane is considered a senior, while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is still in middle age. The cat age in human years calculation reflects the rapid development of the first two years, followed by a more gradual ageing curve. Rabbit, hamster, and guinea pig conversions are included because these beloved small pets are often overlooked by other tools, even though their lifespans and ageing curves differ significantly from dogs and cats. The downloadable Pet Age Certificate is a delightful bonus — perfect for pet birthdays, social media posts, or just a charming keepsake. Everything is free, private, and runs entirely in your browser with no data ever uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How is dog age in human years calculated?
The old "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. Dogs age very quickly in their first two years and then slow down, and the rate depends heavily on size. Small dogs (under 10 kg) tend to live longer and age more slowly than giant breeds (over 45 kg). Our calculator uses size-adjusted conversion tables based on veterinary research — for example, a 1-year-old medium dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, while a 10-year-old giant breed may already be in its late 60s in human terms.
How do you convert cat age to human years?
Cats develop extremely rapidly in their first two years. The first year of a cat's life is roughly equivalent to 15 human years, and the second year adds about another 9, bringing a 2-year-old cat to around 24 in human terms. After that, each cat year is approximately equal to 4 human years. So a 10-year-old cat is roughly 56 in human years, and a 15-year-old cat is around 76.
What life stages does the calculator show?
Depending on the species, the calculator will display one of the following life stages: Newborn/Infant, Kitten/Puppy/Junior, Adolescent, Adult, Mature Adult, Senior, or Geriatric. These stages align with common veterinary classifications and give you a practical sense of your pet's current health and care needs beyond just a number.
Does the tool work for rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs?
Yes. These small animals are fully supported. Hamsters, for instance, have a lifespan of around 2–3 years, so each hamster month represents a significant chunk of their life. A 1-year-old hamster is already middle-aged in human terms. Guinea pigs live 4–8 years, and rabbits can live 8–12 years depending on the breed. Each species uses its own conversion scale tailored to their typical maximum lifespan.
What is the Pet Age Certificate and how do I download it?
After calculating your pet's human age, a "Download Pet Age Certificate" button appears. Clicking it generates a PNG image showing your pet's species, age in years and months, their human-equivalent age, and their life stage — styled as a fun, shareable certificate. The image is created entirely in your browser using the HTML Canvas API, so no data leaves your device. It's perfect for sharing on social media for a pet's birthday or as a keepsake.
