ASCII Art Generator
Turn any text or photo into stunning ASCII art in seconds.
What is it?
The ASCII Art Generator is a free browser-based tool that converts text and images into ASCII art — creative compositions built entirely from keyboard characters. Whether you want to create a big bold banner out of your name, transform a logo into a character mosaic, or add some retro flair to a project, this tool handles both text-to-ASCII and image-to-ASCII conversion with no software to install. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your files and text stay completely private.
How to use it
- Choose a mode: "Text to ASCII" to convert words and phrases, or "Image to ASCII" to upload a photo.
- For text mode, type or paste your text and watch the ASCII art render live. Adjust the font size to control how large the output is.
- For image mode, upload any JPEG or PNG and set the column width (more columns = more detail). Toggle color mode to preserve the original image colors.
- Select your preferred character set — Standard, Dense, or Minimal — to change the visual texture of the output.
- Click "Copy" to grab the plain-text version, "Export TXT" to download as a .txt file, or "Export PNG" to save the rendered image.
Why use this tool
ASCII art has been a cornerstone of digital creativity since the early days of computing, and it remains hugely popular for terminal banners, README headers, social media posts, and retro-themed projects. Our generator is faster and more flexible than most legacy tools — it supports both text and image input, renders instantly, offers color output, and lets you export in multiple formats. All processing happens in your browser, meaning your data never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
What character sets are available?
You can choose from three sets: Standard (a balanced mix of characters for most use cases), Dense (uses a wider range including symbols for finer detail), and Minimal (uses only a handful of characters for a bolder, simpler look).
Can I convert a photo to ASCII art?
Yes. Switch to the "Image to ASCII" tab, upload a JPEG or PNG, and the tool samples the pixel brightness of your image and maps each pixel to the corresponding ASCII character. The result is a character mosaic of your photo.
What does the "color mode" option do?
Color mode applies the original pixel color to each ASCII character in the HTML output, giving a vivid colored ASCII art effect. The plain-text export is always monochrome, but the PNG export captures the colors.
How wide should I set the column count?
For most images, 80–120 columns gives a good balance of detail and readability. Very complex images benefit from 150–200 columns. For social media or README displays, 60–80 columns is usually ideal.
Is there a limit to how long my text can be?
There is no hard limit, but very long strings are rendered at a smaller size to fit within the canvas. For best results, we recommend shorter strings — a name, a word, or a short phrase — especially for the large-font banner effect.
